Upcoming UK Employment Rights Bill: Key Points for the Architecture & Interior Design Sectors
The UK Employment Rights Bill, projected to roll out fully by 2026, aims to reshape the employment landscape with a range of new protections and requirements that will no doubt impact architecture and interior design studios and candidates.
These sectors often employ a mix of full-time, part-time, and project-based contract workers, who will hopefully experience greater protections and job security due to these new reforms.
Here’s a breakdown of the main changes:
Enhanced Employee Protections: Immediate protections from unfair dismissal will be granted from day one, eliminating the existing two-year qualifying period. Probation periods can now extend to nine months, allowing employers more time to assess fit while maintaining employee rights.
Flexible Working as a Default: Flexible working will become a standard option for all employees unless an employer can provide a clear reason against it. This policy supports work-life balance and is particularly beneficial in project-based fields like architecture and interior design.
Inclusivity and Gender Equality Measures: Large employers will need to develop and implement gender equality action plans, addressing areas such as the gender pay gap and providing additional support for employees experiencing menopause.
Zero-Hours Contracts and Job Security: Zero-hours contracts will require minimum guaranteed hours after a set period, and employers will face restrictions on ‘fire-and-rehire’ practices, making restructures that involve contract changes more complex.
Implications for Employers
For architecture and interior design firms, these new regulations will bring compliance challenges, especially with the establishment of the Fair Work Agency, which will monitor adherence to these new standards.
Policies around flexible working, employee protections, and inclusivity measures will require careful planning and documentation.
While these changes could introduce added complexities, they also aim to promote a supportive and stable work environment, ultimately making studios more attractive to top talent.
How do you feel about the new Employment Rights Bill—do you see it driving positive change in architecture and interior design, or do the new regulations feel like more red tape?
